Often the intervention of a dispassionate outsider who is an expert in conflict resolution can be more effective than the efforts of someone who is known to the individuals involved. Unfortunately attempts to resolve such issues internally can make matters worse and delay much needed resolution.
Ironically, conflict often has at its root a positive desire on both sides to find a solution to the problem. Conflict may be an indication that people really care about what is going on, but their way of showing this is inappropriate to the situation. If those involved understand this it is a major first step towards eventual resolution.
We have found that when resolution is achieved many of those involved have described the experience as ‘rewarding and exciting’, and feel that they are now free to move on. This can have a positive and motivating effect on their colleagues and the organisation as a whole.
