A simple framework for supporting staff during the pandemic

CUSP

The CUSP framework works equally in terms of prevention of stress as it does in helping someone who is not coping. In other words, you can use ‘CUSP™’ proactively and reactively. Find out more about using CUSP to proactively prevent stress in this blog article here.

The CUSP framework can be applied to any situation where pressure is present. What it does is get you thinking about your options in a structured way. There are always options because the experience of stress is individual and depends largely on perceptions. If you can change or influence someone’s perceptions, the way they think about a situation, then the stress can be prevented or reduced.

Using CUSP as a framework to support managers during the pandemic:

  • Individual workloads are possibly becoming more task orientated, without much consultation and teamworking going on, which diminishes the sense of control and purpose.  This can also lead to overwhelming workloads at times - with individuals feeling that they can't push back or ask for help.
  • More than ever, managers need to have a structure/schedule for 'check-ins' with all team members - checking understanding within workplace issues and exploring any health impacts and concerns.
  • People are physically isolated and can have busy homes - but this does not mean they should be socially isolated - which seems to be repeatedly happening. Managers should be encouraging teams to take the time to support each other socially as much as possible, e.g. social meetings on Teams; 1to1 catch up calls.
  • This is the time to carry out pressure profiling/stress risk assessments, to ensure the correct supports and processes are in place, as teams begin to consider returning to 'normality'.

The CUSP framework is an integral part of our 'Stress Management Training for Managers' course which can be delivered virtually over 2 x half-days, we also offer a condensed 3-hour version.

You can listen to a podcast (under 5 mins) about the CUSP framework here.
