Constructive conversational skills – a Christmas tip

Ahead of this year’s festivities, a short post highlighting a tip which may be helpful either to anyone wishing to polish up their constructive conversational skills or would like to have a technique in their back pocket to help develop such skills.

We’ve reached that time of year again when media and film images portray cosy homes full of harmony and festivity. However, our personal reality might be anything but. Or your experience may be that most of your interactions with friends and family are cordial but there’s that one person whose views become harder to tolerate as time wears on ... and you’ve promised yourself that this will be the year you challenge their tirade but don’t know how.

We may not be Christmas fairies (although do quite fancy the role!) but we do aim to spread a little kindness and do our bit to help improve personal wellbeing – so are taking this opportunity to offer a possible solution!

We shared a tip with our readers this spring which outlined a helpful technique that learners on our Constructive Conversations course find very helpful for improving communication within their workplaces. Feedback also confirms the benefits found of using the technique in their lives outside of work.

The post has become one of the best read this year. It uses a food analogy to explain a questioning technique which helps encourage views to be shared, thereby developing a conversation and helping to engender understanding and improve relationships.

As a short aside, we have many resources on our website to help with workplace wellbeing, many of which also benefit our personal lives.

You can find an overview of our various resource pages by clicking the button below. A recent addition is our Dignity at Work resource page which include tips to help create and promote a culture of dignity and respect in the workplace and includes topics such as conflict handling and emotional intelligence. Recent updates include an additional section within our Tackling Sexual Harassment at Work resources following October's change to the Equality Act within this area.
