Advice for employers on workplace adjustments for mental health conditions

Perhaps a timeous reminder of the guidance notes from the Department of Health which helps employers consider the types of adjustments they can make for people with mental health conditions.  The document includes practical advice along with links to resources to encourage job retention and return to work.

CIPD Good work index 2020 – UK Working Lives Survey

The index provides a benchmark of good work and job quality in the UK.  Covering 7 dimensions of jobs, it is a tool to help understand the current situation in order to prioritise areas for improving working lives. As it has been published annually since 2018, the CIPD can comment on trends over the years, such as a worrying decline in work-related health and wellbeing.

Developing and evaluating workplace health interventions

A toolkit for employers from Public Health England provides a 4-stage model which can be used in stages, in its entirety, or by taking on board individual steps to improve current workplace health interventions.  The Government website includes a factsheet, a toolkit and an infographic.

Mental Health at Work Commitment: Webinar Series

A series of 6 webinars which aim to bring to life the standards which form the Mental Health at Work Commitment – a simple framework based on the Thriving at Work Standards.  Although the Commitment was launched prior to Covid-19, the webinars look “through the lens of the coronavirus pandemic, and the new realities of work that many of us face”. The 6 standards which the webinars cover are:

  1. Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace by delivering a systematic programme of activity
  2. Proactively ensure work design and organisational culture drive positive mental health outcomes
  3. Promote an open culture around mental health
  4. Increase organisational confidence and capability
  5. Provide mental health tools and support
  6. Increase transparency and accountability through internal and external reporting

Returning to the workplace after Covid-19 lockdown - toolkits

The Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) have toolkits and other valuable resources on their website including a toolkit podcast; a risk assessment tool for SME’s; a brief guide to keeping staff and customers as safe as possible on the high street; and some tips for line managers to identify and support those in need of help.
