Mental Health Awareness Training for Managers

In-House Training Courses > Mental Health Awareness Training for Managers

This course provides an opportunity for managers to learn more about mental wellbeing and how they can support the mental health of their team members.

"A very comprehensive course that equipped me with skills to support staff in mental wellbeing."

Why Mental Health Awareness Training for Managers is so important

Employers, and in particular managers, play a crucial role in supporting the physical and mental well-being of their team members. Managers who adopt a supportive approach to mental ill-health are more likely to retain their staff, reduce absenteeism, enhance performance and improve the likelihood of recovery.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence’s (NICE) mental health at work guideline aims to promote a supportive and inclusive work environment and includes a recommendation to provide training for managers.

This course incorporates the areas NICE recommend organisations consider when offering mental health awareness training for managers. It helps to provide managers and team leaders with essential skills to identify people who may be struggling; gain confidence to intervene at an early stage; have conversations on mental wellbeing and ask appropriate questions; explore workable solutions; and offer or signpost to the right help and support.

Key benefits of attending this course

  • Understand the impact of the stigma that surrounds mental health in the workplace
  • Appreciate how stress impacts emerging mental ill-health
  • Recognise and learn how to explore some of the possible signs that a colleague is struggling with their mental health
  • Increase confidence to have empathetic, non-judgemental, open conversations about mental health
  • Learn how to ask appropriate questions and explore responses while being mindful of the need for personal self-care and boundaries
  • Understand how to approach discussions with individuals regarding internal & external pathways to care and support
  • Understand legal obligations in line with the Equality Act 2010 and other key legislation
  • Consider how reasonable adjustments can be made to sustain employment and promote recovery

"Really good. In a short space of time a lot of pertinent things were discussed that I can use from tomorrow. It was delivered in such a way that kept us engaged and able to ask questions. Thank You."

The course content and capacity can be customised for individuality and to ensure organisations’ specific learning criteria are met. Consultancy in mental health awareness for managers is also an option either as a standalone service or in conjunction with training.

Course Overview

Throughout the training session, there will be an emphasis on creating a safe and supportive learning environment to enable an open, productive discussion of a sensitive topic. Exercises such as case studies and scenarios will be used to raise awareness of the challenges those with a mental health condition regularly face and the practical actions managers can take to address these challenges.

A delegate's response to the question, "What will you do differently after attending this training?"

“Be confident in being able to discuss mental health and play some part towards removing the stigma associated. I'll also be more aware of signs that someone is potentially struggling. In the past I'd have had no idea until it was probably too late to support that person effectively.”
