Why training in the new Duty to prevent Sexual Harassment is so important
New legislation aimed at preventing sexual harassment at work is coming into force in October 2024 in the UK. The new Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 places a duty on employers to proactively take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.
To comply with the key changes in legislation and avoid the risk of higher compensation payouts, the onus is on all employers to examine their roles, responsibilities and conduct in relation to preventing harassment.
What does this mean in practice?
Key areas for consideration are:
- Developing robust harassment policies and fair, transparent procedures for complaint handling.
- Implementing mandatory sexual harassment awareness training for all personnel to inform, update and empower participants to recognise, report and respond appropriately to harassment wherever this might surface in the workplace.
The session is designed to clarify the new duty and its implications for employers and employees, along with action planning to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of harassment.
