Dealing with Incivility at Work Training

In-House Training Courses > Dealing with Incivility at Work Training

This interactive course increases awareness of the negative impact of incivility on relationships, performance and workplace culture. Participants learn techniques to support respectful interactions to reinforce dignity and inclusion at work.

Why Dealing with Incivility at Work training is so important

Organisation effectiveness, productivity and reputation can be significantly enhanced by supporting a culture of upholding civility and dignity at work. However, evidence indicates that many employees are increasingly experiencing incivility at work which has a detrimental effect on the individuals, teams and organisations concerned.

Incivility at work includes rude, disrespectful and insensitive behaviour. It can range from subtle actions such as ignoring someone, to more serious harassment and associated oppressive behaviours. When prevalent, incivility at work can be a significant source of stress, low morale, dis-engagement, reduced performance and contribute to a toxic work environment.

Training in dealing with incivility can support participants to articulate anti-harassment messages and enact person-centred values that reinforce a culture of dignity, equity and respect. They will learn how to recognise behaviours associated with incivility and practise techniques to communicate and interact with increased care and consideration.

Key benefits of attending this course

  • Increases awareness of what incivility is and its impact on individuals, teams and the organisation.
  • Recognises the value of addressing even the most subtle forms of incivility which can have a serious, cumulative effect.
  • Explores the link between civility and dignity, equity and inclusion.
  • Builds confidence to speak up and challenge inappropriate behaviour.
  • Improves communication, relationships, team working, engagement and morale, aligned to person-centred values and expectations of employees.
  • Increases performance as employees are more engaged, thus inhibiting incivility from disrupting the flow of work.
  • Builds psychological safety where everyone feels less inhibited by fear, and more empowered to express their views and ideas, enhancing a workplace culture of respect.
  • Improves company reputation and the ability to attract and retain staff, with overall impact felt in improved job satisfaction, job performance and enhanced customer service.
  • Reduces the likelihood of instances of serious misconduct which require formalised, procedural responses.

Who would benefit from attending this course?

Training in dealing with incivility is suitable for everyone. Even workplaces where instances of misconduct are perceived to be low are likely to have undercurrents of incivility. Taking a proactive approach to increasing awareness of incivility helps to establish expectations of inclusive and respectful behaviour at work.

This course can be delivered as a half-day course or a longer 1-day course which will include a deeper exploration of scenarios and skills practice.

The course content and capacity can be customised for individuality and to ensure organisations’ specific learning criteria are met. Consultancy in dealing with incivility is also an option either as a standalone service or in conjunction with training.
